Despite selling only a small handful to short lines, a surprising number of this group can still be seen today. None of them however are as well known, nor run nearly as long as Great Western \/ Strasburg Railroad No. 90. Built in 1924 for the Great Western, 90 spent her first 43 years hauling sugar beets in Colorado. In 1967, the Strasburg Railroad purchased the locomotive and relocated her to Pennsylvania. For over 50 years, No. 90 has been the regular power on the railroad's passenger excursions as well as revenue freight runs. Lovingly and meticulously maintained on one of North Americas oldest and most popular railroads, No. 90 has introduced millions of people to the sights, sounds and smells of a steam locomotive. Long overdue, No. 90 is now available for the first time in O scale as Lionel's newest brass-hybrid locomotive. Combining the high detail of handcrafted brass with the reliability and features of our die-cast LEGACY steam, this model offers the best of both worlds. Lionel will produce three variations of this locomotive to capture changing details through the decades. This first release includes both original and current variations. The extended smokebox years will be covered in a future release. As-delivered versions will also include similar sister locomotives for the Osage and Seaboard Air Line. But these locomotives were successors in a long line of locomotives going back to 1936. For our next Brass-Hybrid locomotive, Lionel is proud to showcase an earlier version of this amazing machine. Union Pacific placed its second order for Challengers with Alco in 1937. Classed CSA-2 and numbered 3915-3939, these locomotives built off lessons learned in the first 15 production units and were still purposed for both freight and passenger duty. The CSA-2s were converted to oil-burners and in 1944 renumbered into the 3800 series. Over the decades, shop forces made many other modifications; the most visible of which were in the pilots, stacks and sandboxes. Lionel is offering this class with three different detail variations, each in two accurate road numbers and an un-numbered version for those who want a unique number or a starting point to customize the model even further. Of course, we'll also be offering an unpainted \"pilot\" model and two fantasy schemes; one based on the Challenger streamliners and the other the Greyhound paint scheme which was applied to the larger Challengers but not this class. All of the models presented are appropriate for their appearance after the 1944 oil conversion and renumbering. Detail variations include pilot, sand dome and running gear changes. But these locomotives were successors in a long line of locomotives going back to 1936. For our next Brass-Hybrid locomotive, Lionel is proud to showcase an earlier version of this amazing machine. Union Pacific placed its second order for Challengers with Alco in 1937. Classed CSA-2 and numbered 3915-3939, these locomotives built off lessons learned in the first 15 production units and were still purposed for both freight and passenger duty. The CSA-2s were converted to oil-burners and in 1944 renumbered into the 3800 series. Over the decades, shop forces made many other modifications; the most visible of which were in the pilots, stacks and sandboxes. Lionel is offering this class with three different detail variations, each in two accurate road numbers and an un-numbered version for those who want a unique number or a starting point to customize the model even further. Of course, we'll also be offering an unpainted \"pilot\" model and two fantasy schemes; one based on the Challenger streamliners and the other the Greyhound paint scheme which was applied to the larger Challengers but not this class. And with 525 of them, they were a common sight indeed! Although larger and more specialized locomotives would take the spotlight in later decades, the majority of L1s continued to serve to the last days of Pennsy steam. From the Delmarva Peninsula to Rose Lake Yard in East St. Louis, from trimming the westbound hump bowl in Enola to \"snapping\" passenger trains up the east slope to Gallitzen, the L1 could be found in just about every corner and every sort of assignment on the vast system. The Pennsy was also fond of pairing the \"Lollipops\" with other power to balance starting tractive effort and higher speed mainline running. The appearance of the locomotives changed little over the years however, with the addition of power reverse and stokers being the biggest changes. And a good number remained \"hand bombers\" their entire lives to the chagrin of firemen. Even the front-end revisions following WWII eluded a good number of the class. But there were some notable exceptions including some experiments with boosters, oil burners, early Trainphone antenna systems (reflected on #1369 here) and even one converted to a water tube boiler. The Pennsy sold a handful of the locomotives to other lines in the 1940s. Three went to the Santa Fe in 1945 where they were converted to oil burners and ran with Santa Fe tenders until retirement in 1947. The DT\u0026amp;I (owned by the PRR at the time), Lehigh \u0026amp; New England, Montour and Cambria \u0026amp; Indiana also picked up two or three each. One locomotive from the group, No. 520, was selected to represent the class in the railroad's historical collection and is preserved today at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. New to the Lionel roster, the L1 has been extensively upgraded with LEGACY and Bluetooth control as well as Lionel's RailSounds system, whistle steam, and all of the other great features you've come to expect as \"standard\" in a Lionel locomotive. Pennsylvania locomotives are offered in both \"Prewar\" and \"Postwar\" versions typical of the years before and after WWII, although many of the locomotives retained the earlier look into the 1950s.
