Initially assigned between El Paso and Tucumcari, tunnel smoke was not a concern.  Designed for freight service, the locomotives nevertheless received the SPs \"skyline casing\" treatment which helped with smoke abatement, giving them a look that was both fierce and stylish.  And with a top speed of 75 mph, they were capable of assisting on passenger runs if called.  In 1950, SP rebuilt the AC-9s as oil burners.  Many picked up new tenders at the time, often from already retired locomotives of other classes.  They remained in service until 1956, ending their days hauling freight on the Modoc line in eastern California.  Back in the Lionel showroom for the first time since 2017, weve made several upgrades to the AC-9 for this round.  Inside youll find the latest in LEGACY and Bluetooth control of course, upgraded with a three-speaker sound system, kinematic drawbar and force coupler.  Like the prototype, the models are equipped with both an air horn and steam whistle.
