Coaling towers are used to load coal as fuel into railway steam locomotive. Many coaling stations would harness gravity to release coal down a chute, filling up the locomotive's coal storage area.
Here is an MTH Rail King 30-9043 Operating Coaling Tower. This accessory is a reissue of the American Flyer 752 from the 1940s. When activated, the scoop picks up coal and drops it into a waiting car. It will work with both O and S Gauge trains.
