During the mid-19th century, the boxcar surpassed the open gondola as the primary freight car design in America. Since it was fully enclosed, a boxcar could offer better protection against the elements for its valuable load. A staple of freight trains, both on model railroads and on the real high iron, boxcars hauled everything from building materials for houses to department store merchandise to auto parts (and ever a stray hobo or two).
This Keepsake Ornament is based on the Lionel No. 714 Boxcar that was part of the innovative Lionel Outfit No. 705. Doors and both sides of the boxcar slid open.
