Manufacturer Information:

The S-2 Steam Turbine Type 6-8-6 Locomotive No. 671 was based on a prototype built by the Pennsylvania Railroad. This engine was deemed inefficient by this railroad and they only made one of them. However, in the "euphoria" of post-war toy train production, Lionel made thousands of them!

This locomotive did not have magnetraction and the tenders came with staple-end trucks with one electronic coupler.

This, and other early Lionel Post War locomotives like the No. 726, and No. 2020 used a special heat lamp, No. 671-75, as the smoke unit. These smoke units would only work with the No. 196 Smoke Pellets. Beginning in 1947 Lionel would replace these smoke units with the more commonly found heat coil that used the SP Pellets. With these later issues of these locomotives Lionel included a tag that advised the purchaser to use SP Smoke Pellets instead of the No. 196 that was used on earlier issues. Below is pictured a dealer box top and contents of these early smoke unit lamps. Note that eight of the twelve individual lamp boxes have been re-labeled for 18 volts.
