Often referred to as "America's Favorite Locomotive", the General (1872) was offered by LIONEL in the 1950s. The original General had become famous on April 12, 1862, when Union soldiers captured the locomotive deep in Confederate territory. Before they could reach Union lines, the engine was overtaken by the Confederates - but not before a thrilling chase covering 87 miles! The story was retold in the film The Great Locomotive Chase, released in 1956.

This ornament is a replica of the LIONEL® tender (1862T), issued with the General Steam Locomotive in the late 1950s. The original General Steam Locomotive was famous for its involvement in the Civil War. In 1862 Union soldiers deep in Confederate territory captured the locomotive but before they could reach Union troops, the General was retaken by the Confederates.
