Given an all new streamlined consist in 1940, the South Wind was one of three trains providing daily service between Chicago and Miami. Despite the stainless steel construction, the train was painted in the Pennsylvania's "Fleet of Modernism" two-tone red and gold paint scheme. The all-coach train featured a seven-car consist which included dining and observation cars. In 1947, Atlantic Coast Line and Florida East Coast began contributing cars to the train, painted in matching colors. It was not uncommon for the train to grow in length during peak travel seasons as people flocked to warmer climates. An add-on set of heavyweight sleepers would be right at home. And in later years, the consist would get even more varied. Eventually the elaborate color scheme would become more subdued and the consist split up. But with their unique design, the original South Wind cars were always easy to pick out on the PRR.
