The SD80MAC remains one of the most extraordinary locomotives of the Conrail fleet. High-horsepower, high tractive effort locomotives were needed for hauling increased unit coal train traffic over the Pittsburgh and Boston Line. These coal trains often consisted of an almost endless string of Conrail Bathtub Gondolas. General Motors Locomotive Group answered the call with a new 5,000 horsepower giant. The SD80MAC is capable of producing 185,000 lbs. of tractive force. ---Lionel is pleased to offer three great versions of this scale-sized beast: the recognized blue post—Conrail break-up scheme with the P.R.R. markings that signified ownership by Norfolk Southern and the handsome CSX paint scheme that appears on the post—Conrail, CSX controlled SD80MAC diesels. ---We have also included a locomotive born of the question—What if? What if the New York Central System had survived into present day operation? How would the classic livery of their diesel fleet have evolved into the era of modern railroading?
