Cripple Creek Big House: The Cripple Creek County Jail

Cripple Creek is a great place to live and work, but every now and then, some of the fellas party a bit too hearty, or really get worked up about the latest loss from the hometown team. When that happens, people call Cripple Creek Five-Oh and sooner or later, a few end up in the county pokey!

The basics: This is a fully assembled and decorated county jail has interior and exterior lighting. The building also has two parking bays with officially licensed 1948 Fords, beautifully adorned with police colors and logos. Four figures include two police officers, a pedestrian, one prisoner in traditional black and white striped prison garments, plus Jack the German Shepherd.

The building has a modest 10 by 5-¾ inches, rising to a height of 9-¾ inches.

The interior and exterior lighting requires a 4.5-volt power supply sold separately (Menards SKU nos. 279-4061/4361, 4062/4362, or 4050). Power may be applied through either a rear tabletop plug in, or from below the building with a pigtail connector.

Why you need this: The Cripple Creek County Jail is an architectural design firmly rooted in the 1900s: This is a seriously imposing jailhouse! It is a mix of rugged stone and brick construction. Up top is a rooftop turret and a jagged brick rim adding texture, confirming that this in a vintage structure (and a place you don’t want to visit).

You’ll note a mix of arched and square windows. There are visible window bars where the cells are located. There is also a touch of elegance with stone arches over the entrances and vehicle bays. The three exterior light fixtures evoke the specter of vintage gas lighting.

Two Sheriff’s panel vans are parked in the bays. They have red overhead LED lights that cast an ominous glow. One officer is escorting a new guest out of the van, while another officer watches passing traffic. Jack is nearby, but he is undercover, casually keeping an eye out for trouble!

This is a unique building, based on something that might have otherwise been relegated to a museum or visitor’s center back in the ‘80s. Instead, it soldiers on as a visible reminder of what happens when you fight the law, and the law wins in Cripple Creek!
