When you need it bad: Grandpa Jack’s Hobby Shop
Having a pastime helps ease the stress of 21st Century life. But where do you go when you need an extra boxcar, a scale model kit of an M3A1 Sherman tank, decals for a B-25 bomber, and some Styrene for your latest trackside project? Why the local hobby shop of course. Grandpa Jack’s is just what the doctor ordered!
The basics: This is a compact building with a 5 x 3-1/4-inch footprint and a height of 3-1/8 inches. While fine as a stand-alone structure, the design is fully compatible in color and architecture with the (now sold out) Menards no. 279-5735Strip Mall shopping center.
The model has exterior illumination and is designed for use with the Menard’s 4.5-volt power supply sold separately (Menards SKU nos. 279-4061/4361, 4062/4362, or 4050). Power may be applied through a power connection on the back of the building, or by a drop-down pigtail plug from beneath the building.
Why you need this: Everyone loves a hobby shop with a vast, varied selection of inventory and this will make you want to shrink down to 1:87 scale and walk the aisles!
The building design would be at home on any layout modeling the 1960s through today. The entry has a textured concrete pavement appearance. Four columns support the overhanging entry.
The left exterior wall has a large, full color poster for Bachmann Trains, while the right wall, you’ll find an image of Jack on a large sign for Menards Trains!
Ten LEDs illuminate the store’s entrance, while another eight show off the store’s signage: Grandpa Jack’s Hobby Shop with assurance in writing that you can find trains, planes, RC cars, models and die-cast miniatures inside!
A puffing steam engine is painted on the left side, while an RC airplane illustrates the right side. The star of the show is the interior photo: The image shows a massive hobby retailer with a huge layout on display. It is possible you might even recognize the shape and colors of product you normally buy, on the shelves inside!
To prove this point, there are three adults and three kiddies clearly waiting to see that shopkeeper head out from the rear of the store to unlock the doors! You’ll also spot a coin-operated horse on the right, and Jack the German shepherd on the left! No doubt, he is pondering if the shop has restocked their supply of squeaky toys!
You may not have a real hobby shop like Grandpa Jack’s near you, but you probably have a good memory of a similar store. This building lets you add that wonderful image to your HO gauge layout.
