Relatively uncommon until the 1870s, when the petroleum industry ordered large quantities of metal tanks carried on wooden car bodies.Standard design evolved by the early 1900s: an 8,000-11,000 gallon metal tank on a metal flatcar-like underframe.Transition from riveted to welded construction began in the late 1930s.Introduced X-ray inspection of welds for safety and used giant annealing ovens to relieve joint stress.Welded tanks are stronger, less susceptible to rust and corrosion, and less likely to rupture in wrecks.New design in mid-1950s: tank became the structural backbone, eliminating the need for a full-length underframe.Todays large-capacity tank cars carry a variety of liquids from oil to chemicals to foodstuffs.Tanks may be lined with glass or other materials for corrosive liquids and may have heating or cooling apparatus.MTH Premier O Scale freight cars complement any manufacturers scale proportioned O Gauge locomotives.Available in two car numbers for easier combination into multi-car consists.Can operate on tight O Gauge curves for added versatility.
