While Roanoke, Virginia is a bit farther afield (5-6 hrs from Pittsburgh), it it worth exploring if you are a railroad history buff! Several members of the Brady's Crew visited Roanoke this summer.
Roanoke is the former headquarters of the now-defunct Norfolk & Western railway.

If you grew up in Pennsylvania and love trains, you're bound to be familiar with the Horseshoe Curve in Altoona!
The curve was built by Pennsylvania Railroad in 1854 to allow for safer and quicker passage through the Allegheny Mountains. It is considered to be an engineering marvel, due to the length, degree of curvature, and grade.
